Distinguishing widely distributed official references from internal communications helps identify what belongs in a commercial publications library. The Fire Protection Handbook is a comprehensive reference that is widely sold and used by professionals, so it fits in a commercial library. The International Building Code is a model code published for sale and adopted by jurisdictions, making it a standard item in commercial catalogs. The National Fire Codes are NFPA’s code standards that are published for sale and used across the industry, so they also belong in a commercial library. Engineering Technical Letters, however, are typically internal engineering notices or memos rather than widely distributed publications; they aren’t part of the standard commercial catalog. Therefore, Engineering Technical Letters are identified as not part of the commercial publications library.
